Discover US is the University of Sheffield's sustained outreach programme for Y9 pupils who meet specific widening participation (WP) criteria from state schools within South Yorkshire and the surrounding region. Through repeated visits to the University in Years 9, 10 and 11, the programme is designed to raise participants' aspirations and their awareness of Higher Education. It aims to help these young people discover how university is within their grasp, and support them to make considered and informed choices.
Four of our academy students, Kaci Roddy, Joshua Usher, Lewis Jebson and Olivier Thompson all applied and were successful. They attended on Tuesday 11th December 2018 for their first workshop at Sheffield University and overview of the programme.
Josh Usher gained praise during the day and was named one of the 'students of the day' for his committment and engagement during the sessions.
There was around 100 students present for the first meeting, coming from areas of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. The next visit is in 2019 and involves an overnight stay.
